AI won’t Replace Project Managers, but Project Managers using AI will Replace Those Who Don’t

The rise of AI is undeniable, prompting a fundamental question about the future of many professions. Will AI make us obsolete? My answer is a resounding no.

The rise of AI is undeniable, prompting a fundamental question about the future of many professions. Will AI make us obsolete? My answer is a resounding no.

Welcome back to the second edition of Leah’s Lens, where this month I’ll be talking about the rise of AI and how Project Managers need to start utilising it to stay ahead of the game.

As I always say, I’m no tech expert! However, I’ve always been interested in learning more about new technologies and finding ways to embrace them, especially when they can make a role more efficient. Having worked on many digital transformations throughout my career, I’ve seen firsthand how tools like AI can support project managers rather than replace them. One of my favourite sayings is you should only touch things once, and that’s where I see real value in AI: helping us streamline processes, cut out repetitive tasks, and focus more on the people, decisions, and leadership that no technology can replicate.

With this in mind, we all know that AI tools have many benefits. There are more accessible tools today than ever before. Tools that can spark inspiration, accelerate ideas, and fuel research at a speed we couldn’t have imagined even a few years ago.

But here’s the truth: tools alone don’t deliver change. People do.

The heart of project management has never been about tools. It has always been about human connection, leadership, decision-making, and delivering outcomes. AI can crunch numbers, highlight risks, and automate reporting, but it cannot replace human judgment, empathy, or the ability to navigate complexity and bring stakeholders together.

That said, as project managers at Enablists, our team’s purpose is clear: we exist to drive change, reduce costs, and boost profit while making a real, lasting difference. But thriving in today’s market means more than relying on what’s always worked. We’ve recognised that to stay ahead, we must harness the power of AI, not as a replacement for who we are, but as an enabler that amplifies what we do best.

So, how do we leverage the AI Partnership?

The answer lies in recognising the unique strengths of human techniques and AI technologies.

AI is a fantastic tool for handling heavy lifting that consumes time and energy. It can surface insights in seconds that once took hours, automate reporting, flag risks early, and keep track of moving parts across a complex portfolio.

However, the essence of project management isn’t in the spreadsheets or dashboards; it’s in the conversations, the trust, and the leadership that bring people together around a shared goal. That human connection unlocks commitment, resolves conflict, and drives real change.

By leaning on AI for efficiency and precision, project managers gain the space to focus on what machines cannot do: inspiring teams, influencing stakeholders, and guiding organisations through uncertainty.

The best project managers of the future won’t be those who compete with AI; they’ll be the ones who combine its power with their own ability to lead, empathise, and create lasting impact.

The question every leader should be asking right now is not “Will AI replace us?” but rather “How will we use AI to outperform the competition?”

This is the future of professional services: a partnership where human expertise and cutting-edge technology combine to drive unprecedented results.

The choice is clear: will you use AI to lead, or will you be left behind?

I’d love to know your thoughts on AI and how you use it in your profession. Plus, if we can support you with your business goals, let’s talk.
