The Difference Between Running Projects and Delivering Real Change

Across many sectors, we see businesses investing heavily in transformation and strategic ideas. Yet despite this effort, leaders often tell us that the change they were aiming for hasn’t fully materialised. Projects have been delivered, but the organisation hasn’t truly moved forward.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely break over Christmas and had some time to relax. Now that we’re back into the swing of things, I wanted to share a perspective that shaped much of our work last year and will undoubtedly continue to shape the organisations we support in 2026.

Across many sectors, we see businesses investing heavily in transformation and strategic ideas. Yet despite this effort, leaders often tell us that the change they were aiming for hasn’t fully materialised. Projects have been delivered, but the organisation hasn’t truly moved forward.

Is this something you can relate to? At Enablists, we believe this happens because running a project is not the same as delivering real, lasting change.

Projects Deliver Outputs. Change Delivers Outcomes.

Most organisations are well-versed in project management. At its core, project management is a structured approach to planning, executing, and closing a specific endeavour within a defined timeframe and budget. It provides clarity around:

  • Well-defined objectives
  • Tangible deliverables
  • Timelines and resource planning
  • Progress tracking and reporting

Project management is essential. It ensures structure and accountability. But it doesn’t, on its own, guarantee transformation.

That is where change management plays a critical role.

Change management is a structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams, and organisations from their current state to a desired future state. It focuses on the human side of change, helping people understand and adopt new ways of working.

Both are essential. But they serve fundamentally different purposes.

Where Projects Fall Short Without Change Management

Organisations often assume that completing a project automatically results in change, but this isn’t always the case.

Why is this? Well…

  1. A lack of focus on people and teams
  2. Change fatigue
  3. Insufficient leadership alignment

Change requires leaders who can complete a project AND deliver real change.

So, What Do We Do Differently?

We are a Professional Services Business. We partner with our clients, working alongside their teams, not at a distance. We immerse ourselves in the business to understand culture, context, and capability before designing and delivering tailored, sustainable solutions.

Delivering Real Change Looks Like This

When we partner with organisations, we help them achieve more than project completion. We enable:

  • Adoption, not just delivery
  • Capability building
  • Tailored approaches
  • Sustainable outcomes

Improvements continue long after the project concludes.

Looking Ahead

As we start the new year, many organisations are reflecting on the effectiveness of their initiatives and planning for a fresh start.

If you are considering any changes, I encourage you to think beyond the project plan:

  • Are your teams invested?
  • Are you building long-term goals?
  • Is there a strategy for embedding new behaviours and ways of working?

If these questions resonate with you, we would be delighted to discuss how Enablists can support you.
